Back in 1993, my dad got a 14.4k modem. Super cool. I don't remember how I learned about BBSs, but once I learned you could go to specific ones and download games, and you could put the games on 3.5" disks, I was hooked. I wanted to build a library of really awesome games. So I went onto every BBS I could find, and I queued up every game they had to download. I'd leave it running all night sometimes.
So if you know how you connect to a BBS with a modem, you're dialing the phone number of that BBS directly. I was only 11, and had no understanding of long distance charges. I think I knew more than my parents about what I was doing, so they had the surprise of opening up a 500 dollar phone bill. I think by the time we got the first phone bill, I had already racked up a sizable second month's phone bill as well.
To my parents' credit, I don't remember them really being mad, but just told me I couldn't do it any more.
I sure wish I still had those games. They must have been cool :)
